This posting will be used to fill one (1) term full-time position ending September 15, 2028, working 75 hours bi-weekly. It will establish a 12-month eligibility list which may be used to fill future similar permanent and term positions.
This job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon.
Who we are
Environmental Health Services (EHS) works to protect the health and safety of the public across a wide variety of program areas including food safety, drinking water, sewage disposal, housing, recreational facilities, rabies control, tobacco and vaping control and personal services. To achieve the goal of protecting public health, EHS follows a progressive enforcement strategy to ensure compliance to requirements under the Public Health and Safety Act, local and national standards, guidelines, and public health best practices. You will be part of a team that actively identifies hazards in recreational, commercial and industrial premises through various activities including performing inspections so businesses can reopen and stay open.
Your role
The Environmental Health Officer (EHO) is responsible for the protection of public health and safety through the development and implementation of a broad range of risk-based programs, enforcement of legislation, participation on national and local committees, contribution to departmental and inter-departmental activities, and other related duties.
The ideal candidate is a confident and collaborative professional who can build positive relationships while effectively administering and enforcing legislation. You are skilled at assessing risk, solving complex problems, communicating technical information to diverse audiences, and exercising sound judgment in situations that may have significant public health implications. You are comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities, and making evidence-based decisions to protect public health and safety.

Essential qualifications
Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the qualifications below. - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health (or a relevant degree from a BoC-accredited program);
- Current CIPHI(C) certification by the Board of Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors;.
- A member in good standing of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors;
- Recent experience conducting public health inspections in a variety of program areas (e.g., food safety, drinking water, sewage disposal, personal services, etc.);
- Experience using Hedgehog, Amanda or other health inspection software tools to manage and perform inspections and applications is an asset.

Conditions of employment
You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.
- Current CIPHI(C) certification by the Board of Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
- A member in good standing of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors;
- Copy of Degree
- Valid class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent;
- RCMP Vulnerable Sector Clearance;
- Transportation of Dangerous Good (within 6 months of hire)
- WHMIS 2015 within 1 month of hire.
Job requirements
This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:
- Works independently in the field and may encounter challenging, confrontational, or unpredictable situations;
- Exposure to a variety of environmental, microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards while conducting inspections and investigations, and may be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Required to enter confined spaces, industrial sites, construction areas, and remote locations;
- Regular lifting, carrying, and transporting of equipment and supplies up to 25 kg;
- Frequent walking, bending, reaching, hiking, and standing for extended periods;
- Travel year round throughout Yukon, approximately 15% to 25%, including driving on remote roads and in varying weather conditions;
- Periodic overnight travel, with trips away from home of up to five consecutive days; and
- Regular use of computers, vehicles, and testing equipment, which may involve prolonged sitting, standing, or repetitive movement.
